Instagram Outreach Marketing Highlight- Introducing the Layout Photo Collage Application

Last week, Instagram announced the launch of a new photo-editing app Layout From Instagram.  The app must be downloaded separately from Instagram, and is currently available on iOS, with the Android version on its way.

What’s all the fuss about? 

Posting photo collages is not an entirely new idea when it comes to Instagram, but with Layout, users now have the option to merge multiple photos into one and upload them to their profiles in a more convenient and streamlined way than before.

By providing access to your camera roll, Layout organizes the photos on your phone into three sections: all photos, photos with faces in them, and recent photos. Users can select up to 9 different photos to include in a collage and Layout will suggest various templates based on the number they’ve included.

From there, the editing options get pretty cool. Users can drag and drop photos for perfect placement, zoom and adjust size, even rotate the various images to create mirror effects.

How It’s Different.

Again, creating photo collages on a smartphone isn’t a groundbreaking idea, and there are a handful of free alternatives to Layout that have been around for years. So how is Instagram setting their new app apart?

  • Photo Booth- Allows users to snap a handful of photos in quick succession and then upload them directly into a collage format.
  • Identification of photos with faces- Shows users only the photos on their camera roll that have people’s faces in them.

Brand Example.

It took no time at all for brand’s to begin leveraging the Layout app. In the first week, a number of brands from various industries began experimenting with collages and mirrored edits, using the hashtag #layout. One example that caught my eye was Sephora’s #ContouringMagic collage. Not only did featuring “before an after” makeup with multiple photos work great, Sephora was also able to include a call to action asking followers to upload photos of their own makeup “war paint” using the hashtag #ContouringMagic.
